Building on the success of Westcliff, in 2013 we set up a new Growing Together site in Shoeburyness. The Big Lottery Fund gave us a £300,000 grant to develop the site on Elm Road.
We have put in a sustainable wooden building, set up two polytunnels, laid out vegetable plots, built a large wildlife pond and are slowly transforming the waste land into a calm but useful place for local people to be proud of. The site was awarded a prestigious Green Flag Community Award – the mark of a quality park or green space.
Friars Primary School have compiled a lovely film of their work at Growing Together Shoeburyness. Please watch it to get an insight into their day at Growing Together Shoeburyness on Mondays.
We run a weekly women’s group here on a Wednesday, and have two members’ days a week on Tuesdays and Thursday. Our horticulture training takes place here on a Tuesday.
We recently took delivery of a fantastic orange, refurbished shipping container at Shoebury. It has a green roof and bug houses on the walls. It will be a really useful to space for training and meetings and will be used for our many events.
Working with Southend Council's Integrated Youth Support Service, we run a weekly youth club for children aged 10 and up. Every Wednesday (April - October) from 4-6pm, they can plant, write, act, sing, make fire pits, all sorts of activities under the guidance of Growing Together staff.
