Trust Links founding project was Growing Together in Westcliff at the corner of Prittlewell Chase and Fairfax Drive.
This one acre site has been transformed over the years into a productive growing area for fruit and vegetables, a beautiful flower garden, and a place for meetings, courses, counselling and social activities. Our members tend the garden with staff and volunteers, gaining confidence, getting exercise, meeting new people, sharing experiences and working towards qualifications. The garden is a frequent winner in the ‘Southend in Bloom’ and the ‘Anglia in Bloom’ competitions.
We have recently received funding from the National Lottery Heritage Fund to develop a new wildlife garden to attract birds, bats and other wildlife. We ran a Birds and Bats Course for 12-weeks teaching members and volunteers new skills, and developing this new area which is now open to the public to enjoy.
The site is home to our chickens which are looked after by our members. There are polytunnels for bringing on young plants, a log cabin for training or drinking tea, a new arbour for quiet moments and a training room for courses and classes.
Our members work and eat together. Our kitchen members and volunteers can be found rustling up a tasty chilli or filling jacket potatoes most mornings to feed the hungry garden team.
We offer our members training in various areas that will help them in the job market. We run both short and longer courses including a Diploma in horticulture, Health and Safety, Manual Handling, Healthy living and Managing Anxiety and Depression. We help find work experience for our members to get them back to employment. We also provide in-house training and work experience for our volunteers.
We have a small shop at Westcliff from where we sell the vegetables and fruit we grow in the garden and a selection of plants we have raised too. The shop is open from 9am – 4pm Monday to Friday. There’s a selection of gardening books and magazines on sale too as well as some garden items like bird boxes
Growing Together has a really positive impact on the lives and wellbeing of people that attend the projects as members. Our Evaluation Report from 2017 captures the change in people’s lives.
