“REACH has changed my life”

With 1 in 4 people in the UK said to experience a mental health problem each year, we are reaching out to help people avoid crisis and build coping mechanisms and life skills to safeguard their wellbeing, and just one of the ways we do this is through our Recovery College, REACH.

REACH creates opportunities to learn in a safe and supportive environment and includes lots of chances for people to share their experiences and connect with others who understand what it’s like to be living with a mental health condition, and we are seeing some life changing stories emerge. Marie recently shared how her life has changed thanks to support from REACH.

Marie has always suffered with depression but found solace in the team and other students at REACH after finding herself in what she describes as a ‘really dark place’. She explained "I hit rock bottom and couldn’t even get out of bed. I just got worse and worse, lower and lower, but REACH has changed my life.”

Marie has been a student at the REACH Recovery College for around 8 months and enjoys a variety of the courses they offer, she said "people think you look okay, but I honestly felt broken. At REACH everyone understands.” She recently tried her hand at sailing with REACH at Hanningfield Sailability and added "Coming to REACH gives me something to live for, I never would have pictured doing something as amazing as this as part of my recovery!”

Wayne has suffered with anxiety since the age of 20 and suffers with panic attacks too, but says he has always felt relaxed and comfortable at REACH. Previously a student himself, Wayne is now volunteering at REACH and focusing on a new, positive future, but he recalls "When I walked into REACH, it was so comforting to know that others go through the same thing. REACH has taught me how to appreciate life again, and has brought my normal self-back out.”

REACH are currently running a sailing course for their students throughout the summer alongside a range of other wellbeing courses and have a diverse array of opportunities for local people living with a mental health conditions.
