Growing Together Shoeburyness’ is flying the flag as one of the UK’s very best

The Growing Together Shoeburyness project has been recognised by the Green Flag Award Scheme as one of the very best in the country.
The garden is among a record-breaking 1,797 UK parks and green spaces that will today receive a prestigious Green Flag Community Award  – the mark of a quality park or green space.
This international award, now into its third decade, is a sign to the public that the space boasts the highest possible environmental standards, is beautifully maintained and has excellent visitor facilities.
Growing Together Shoeburyness was launched in 2013, building on the success of Trust Links’ original site Growing Together Westcliff on Fairfax Drive. Funded by the Big Lottery Fund and lots of other donations, the garden was created on waste land and has transformed the space.  It has been enhanced and developed over the past four years incorporating sustainable wooden buildings, polytunnels, vegetable plots, a large wildlife pond, community pets, a gazebo and specially designed sensory areas.  It is used by our members who have mental health problems for therapeutic gardening.  In addition local schools attend education programmes and courses are run for the local community.
Matt King, Trust Links CEO, said: "We are absolutely delighted to receive a Green Flag Community Award for the first time.  We know how much quality green spaces matter to residents and visitors, and this award celebrates the dedication that goes in to developing and maintaining Growing Together Shoeburyness to such a high standard.  This flag is the reflection of the hard work and dedication of our staff, members and volunteers in Shoeburyness.  It also drives forward and supports one of our key objectives of building stronger communities and promoting sustainable and environmentally friendly living.”
International Green Flag Award scheme manager Paul Todd said: "We are delighted to be celebrating another record-breaking year for the Green Flag Award scheme.

"Each flag is a celebration of the thousands of staff and volunteers who work tirelessly to maintain the high standards demanded by the Green Flag Award. The success of the scheme, especially in these challenging times, demonstrates just how much parks matter to people.”
We will be hosting a flag raising open garden event for new prospective members on Tuesday 22 August.
