It's International Women’s Day, an annual call to action for accelerating gender parity, and we would like to invite you to join us at Growing Together Shoeburyness next Wednesday afternoon as we celebrate local women who overcome adversity each and every day.
At Trust Links, we have four therapeutic gardens across South Essex, and Growing Together Shoeburyness is home to ou weekly Women’s Group, a safe and supportive environment for local woman to come together and grow, quite literally and personally too! The group often enjoy the tranquil community gardens, resident Guinea Pigs, and enjoy art and craft projects together too, as having the space to be creative is vital for a healthy mind and personal development.
Janet, 67, from Shoeburyness has been going to the Women’s Group since 2014 after losing her first husband to cancer. Originally from South Yorkshire, Janet moved to Essex in 1998 and when her husband passed, she found it a very lonely time. She said "when you lose someone so close to you, you suddenly feel very alone. At first, I wouldn’t say boo to a goose, but now I feel more outgoing, and happy to meet and talk with others.”
Janet say she is enjoying life once again and says that the Women’s Group at Growing Together Shoeburyness played a vital part in her overcoming such a traumatic period of her life. She continued "I would tell anyone going through a hard time to give something like our women’s group a try; it really does help. It gets you out of the house and gets rid of that cloud over your head.”
Fellow member and volunteer Isla, 38, helps to lead the activities as she has a passion for art and crafts. She said "we try to empower women to pursue the activities that make them happy. Some women will come and find themselves learning new skills, and we see a real change in their confidence. "
