FCLG raise funds by travelling the world virtually

With the pandemic affecting individuals and businesses across the country, FCLG thought up a creative solution to encourage their employees to get outside, get motivated and get fundraising – and Trust Links were one of two mental health charities chosen to share the funds.

The Around the World in 30 Days Challenge encouraged its employees to walk, run or cycle, logging their mileage each time they ventured out. With each mile, 20p was donated by the company to the charitable causes, and in the final week the donations were doubled to 40p per mile.

As the weeks sped past, those participating in the fundraising were sent emails of encouragement, and updates on where in the world their combined mileage has got them to. Starting in Bicester, the team managed to virtually travel through France, Italy, Germany and finished in Croatia, covering a massive 1887.97 miles in just 4 weeks.

Phoebe, HR associate at FCLG – “Exercising is a great way to boost your mental health, and help alleviate symptoms of social withdrawal which some of us may be feeling. It can also increase your performance at work, making you feel less stressed and fatigued.”

FCLG chose to raise money for charities that provide support to those living with mental health difficulties, and shared the £488 raised with Trust Links and Restore, based in Oxfordshire. A representative from the company said: “We chose to support Trust Links for this challenge as mental health and awareness is a really important thing we try to encourage within our company, and found over lockdown [mental health is something] many of our employees have struggled with, so it would be a great cause to give back to whilst trying to up our energy levels and increase our exercise intake.”

Michael took part in the fundraiser, and shared: “I have been a club runner for many years now and I had been training for a triathlon which was cancelled earlier this year. I found it difficult to get motivated to train so when my employers @FCLG_uk announced that they would pay every staff member in the company per mile I jumped at the chance to get going again.”

“I have personally used mental health services before and giving something back felt important to me. FCLG raised £488 in total which was split between two local charities. The staff collectively travelled 1,887 miles! I walked our two dogs, ran and even completed a 56 mile cycle ride.”

Thank you to the team at FCLG for their tremendous efforts, and for the funds that we have received from the ‘Around the World in 30 Days’ fundraiser!
